In December 2025, our film crew arrived in Utila while filming another documentary. What we expected was routine production. What we found was one of the most beautiful places we had ever visited and one of the most heartbreaking environmental challenges we’ve ever witnessed.
Utila is home to some of the most spectacular marine life in the Caribbean and sits within the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest barrier reef system in the world. Every year, divers, marine biologists, and travelers from around the globe visit these waters to experience their incredible biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and unforgettable wildlife.
But hidden deep within Utila’s mangrove ecosystem only accessible by boat lies a reality that very few visitors ever see.
Decades of accumulated landfill waste refrigerators, washing machines, plastics, metal, and countless tons of debris have become trapped among the mangrove roots, threatening one of the island’s most important natural ecosystems. Mangroves help protect coastal waters and support the health of nearby coral reefs, preserving them is essential to the long-term health of this extraordinary marine environment.
We couldn’t simply film it and walk away.
That’s why we created A Dot in the Ocean a documentary that not only tells Utila’s story but also launches The Utila Project, an initiative dedicated to helping restore this extraordinary island.
